Objective of USM Global Campus

The idea of USM Global Campus, also fondly known as the Global Campus, was born due to the rapid change of education landscape in Malaysia.

The Higher Education is changing in the global view – demands for world-class education is growing especially in the Asia Pacific region, costs of education is increasing, and costs of providing education is also beginning to impact institutions of higher learning. Establishing new campuses requires huge amount of capital expenditure. Public or government-funded universities cannot continue to fund its operations, expansion and research with grants from the government, and would require new income generating streams. Education cities are solutions to these new issues related to higher education – sharing of services and reduction of capital expenditure, connected communities with international experience that benefits the community of students and teaching faculty, entry into bigger markets with lower financial risks.

The main objective of the Global Campus is to attract world-class international partners with the clusters acting as both academic and research collaboration platform offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a non-competitive environment, with potential mutual recognition and synergistic collaboration in programme delivery and research partnerships. The scope of international collaboration encompasses joint-academic programmes, faculty exchange, sharing of resources to be promoted to all cluster anchor institutions as well as potential research collaboration with other cluster anchors. The cluster collaboration is aimed at creating an immersed academic and research-intense ecosystem with dynamic relationships that bring together the strengths of each anchor cluster institution (local and international), leveraging on each others brand and collectively, promoting a common global brand that is the cornerstone of an education hub for the region.

Having our vision and the Government's ambition in mind, the KLEC team is working hard, striving towards achieving these goals. We are proud to say that the project is picking up its pace and moving closer to realizing our aims :)

Getting to know Kuala Lumpur Education City

The Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLEC) project was launched and approved by the Malaysian Government via both the Prime Ministers' Department and the Ministry of Higher Education in 2006 as a private-led project aimed at achieving Malaysia's vision to be a regional hub for higher education.

KLEC is envisioned as an international hub for education, colocating international universities, local institutions of higher learning, secondary and primary teaching and learning facilities together with commercial and residential areas in a smart city development. Here, the universities, colleges and schools contribute to the social, economic, and cultural life of the city and its community. It includes three main development projects - KLEC Academic Park (which includes the KLEC University Park, Medical Park and Research & Innovation Park), KLEC Incubation Campus and the KLEC City Campus.

The 500-acre KLEC Academic Park development is designed to cater for an expected student population of about 30,000 based on an international community reflective of the global aspirations of KLEC and the Government.

With its unique shared service model developed by KLEC, as well as promoting the academic cluster model between its partner institutions via sharing of resources, expertise, knowledge and experience, governed by a common KLEC Council, and leveraging on the individual strengths of its core anchor cluster partner while creating a global brand and platform for collaboration, KLEC and its partners hope to develop this hub as a showcase for globalizing education within the broader collaborative framework of an emerging, dynamic global education network.

As part of the initiative to develop a world-class education city, KLEC is currently embarking on a few various projects which includes the Epsom College Malaysia and University Sains Malaysia Global Campus.
